Child Therapy in Yreka, CA

Children don't always have the words to explain what they're feeling.

Stress, anxiety, grief, family changes, and difficult experiences may show up through behavior, irritability, withdrawal, fears, trouble at school, sleep changes, or emotional reactions that seem much bigger than the situation.

At Community Roots Counseling, we provide therapy for children beginning around age 5, depending on the child's needs, ability to participate, and therapist availability.

Our goal is to give children a safe, supportive place to better understand their emotions while also helping the adults in their lives understand how to support them.

Parents and caregivers may seek therapy when a child is experiencing:

  • Anxiety, fears, or excessive worry

  • Difficulty regulating emotions

  • Frequent anger or emotional outbursts

  • Grief or loss

  • Separation or divorce

  • Changes within the family

  • Trauma or stressful experiences

  • School difficulties

  • Peer or friendship problems

  • Changes in behavior

  • Low self-esteem

  • Parent-child conflict

  • Adjustment to foster care, adoption, or changing caregivers

What does child therapy look like?

Therapy with children looks different from therapy with adults.

Depending on the child's age, needs, and therapist, sessions may include conversation, developmentally appropriate activities, emotional identification, coping skills, problem-solving, and other ways of helping children express and understand what they're experiencing.

The goal is not simply to stop a behavior. We want to understand what may be underneath it.

Will parents be involved?

Usually, yes.

Parents and caregivers are an important part of treatment for children. Your child's therapist may meet with you periodically, ask for information about what you're seeing at home, provide guidance, or involve you in portions of treatment when clinically appropriate.

At the same time, children benefit from having a therapeutic relationship where they can feel safe talking openly. Your therapist will help you understand how confidentiality and caregiver involvement will work based on your child's age and circumstances.
